I recommend visiting Harper's Magazine's website (www.harpers.org) every Tuesday to read the latest edition of the Weekly Review column. In three short paragraphs they give a briefing on world news of the last week, and they manage to do so in a way that makes one realize what a strange world this is. I found when I was living overseas that I could go an entire week without reading a newspaper and then check the Harper's Weekly Review on Tuesday to feel more-or-less caught up.
